This monograph studies literature as a multilayer esthetic system. Fiction, according to the author, is an intermediary layer between pulp fiction and high classics. The eclectic and unoriginal poetics of famous writers-"neo-realists" of the early 20th century (M. Artsybashev, An. Kamenskii, I. Novikov, etc) is analyzed in the context of the esthetics of a new kind of realism. One chapter deals with women-writers in modernist style: A. Verbitskaia, E.
