Many deserving songs were recorded by Morse on Pathe/Perfect but the poor sound quality of that label limited their use here. Only the first two selections on this CD were from this acoustic period. She wrote a number of "blues" but seemed to favor charming, sentimental ballads. Morse was one of those rare vocalists who could put over a hot number or a moody torch song with equal ease and skill. Most impressive is Morse"s treatment of ballads in which she reaches down for those resonant, evocative chest tones.
