Would the American colonies have been successful in their struggle for independence without assistance in money and men from France? This is an often contested question.. It is difficult to envision how the new nation on its own could have successfully concluded its struggle unless the thirteen colonies had provided troops, money, and supplies on a far greater scale than had been their custom. It is conceivable that the colonies could have united in a large enough effort, but they also could well have decided to accept some decent terms from England following years of exhausting warfare. In all events, the part taken by France in the American Revolution, the aid she gave us, and its influence on the result of the contest cannot be overestimated or ever forgotten.
