Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa) - Black cumin, also called black caraway and Roman coriander, is grown for its aromatic black seeds which resemble fennel in odor and taste like peppery nutmeg. The cumin herb seeds are ground and used like pepper. The cumin herb plant has whitish flowers, followed by inflated seed pods. Nigella sativa is one the most revered medicinal seeds in history. Some people have considered black cumin to be the panacea to all ailments. Black cumin seeds to treat headaches, toothaches, aid digestion, relieve gasses in the stomach and intestines, treat skin problems, and help many other ailments. These little seeds have over one hundred different chemical constituents, including abundant sources of all the essential fatty acids. Cumin herb plants should be grown in a sunny spot in the garden in good soil approximately 6 to 9 inches apart. Be sure to continue a regular watering of the plants and keep the area weeded.
