The Last Servant
Slaveholders depended upon their workers for economic and domestic wellbeing as much as their workers depended on them for food and shelter. In this historical novel, "The Last Servant," author Stevie Platt explores the interconnectedness of two such American families whose lives converge, mingle, and reconnect after five generations. Set in the South, "The Last Servant" follows two estranged branches of the Blackburn family and the African-American family who worked both their Mississippi and Louisiana plantations. The novel chronicles the families" interwoven lives through four states and more than 150 years. The story continues to unfold as a newspaper reporter interviews the granddaughter of the Blackburn family"s "last servant," Mary.
