Written by Sandy Wilson, The Boy Friend opened in London in 1954 and ran for 2,078 performances over a period of five years. Immensely popular at the time, the show was transferred to Broadway nine months after its London opening. Starring the then newcomer Julie Andrews as Polly Browne, the Broadway production ran for 485 performances and won Julie Andrews the Theatre World Award.
