From the point where at about a minute and a half into the first track a plodding, old-timey horn section is startlingly interrupted by a snarling electric guitar, it becomes evident that, in this album, New York based +/- (Plus/Minus) will tear apart conventions and do what it damn well pleases. Lamenting the boundaries that stop so many in their tracks, James Baluyut sings, "Now it"s flavor of the month/with all the expectations met/Before they strike a single chord/you can predict what you will get." One thing is certain: the lyric is anything but self referential; Plus/Minus spurns expectations, evades predictions, and, while doing so, crafts gorgeous, melancholy indie-pop.
