Conditioned brings together Turkish and Kurdish video and film works that explore the shaping of minds belonging to children and adolescents within the educational system as well as contemporary Turkish society at large. Through a variety of styles and approaches, each of these works elude to the conditioning of youth including references to the seemingly innocent daily repetition of the national anthem (The First Ones by Hatice Gleryz), more violent military methods (Origin by Erkan ™zgen), and social injustice (Our village by Sener ™zmen). From the privacy of home (A young girl is growing up by Ferhat ™zgr) to public spaces (On the thin ice de Bur‡ak Kaygun), several processes are at play, subtly or directly, through the women"s prison featured in Koro by Gldem Durmaz or the school in Where Bluebirds fly by Berat Isik. Beyond that lies a reflection on the impact of the world and on the development of an individual such as with the video Delirium by Ethem ™gven confronting the mechanisms of the consumer society and its psychological consequences. The artists featured on Conditioned belong to the same generation, born between the 1960s and 1970s, and they all live and work, with some exception, in Turkey. Though the positions and criticisms of the artists are explicit, the works nevertheless involve nuances, finesse and poetry. Published on DVD by Lowave, enriched by artist interviews and subtitled in 3 languages (English, French, German), Conditioned offers a mix of documentary styles, art video and experimental films and represents the accomplishment of the video art scene and of the dynamics of independent cinema.
