The Triplett 3388 handheld wire and cable tracing kit for finding live wires on 120V and 220V circuits has an inductive tracer with audio and visual signals, and a tone generator that has a warble or pulsed tone, with adjustable pitch. The tracer has a field effect transistor (FET) for detecting electrical fields, and integrated circuit (IC) for detecting frequency. The tracer beeps and flashes a red light to indicate magnetic fields. The tone generator uses a warble or pulsed tone with adjustable pitch to overcome interference, and guide the tracer to wires. The tracer and tone generator are each cased in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic for strength and light weight. The tracer can detect a signal from the tone generator up to three feet away in open air. This kit can be used to locate buried wires up to six inches deep, and trace wires up to 1,000 feet long. The kit has a one year warranty, and is often used by home remodelers and in the telephone, electrical, and security industries to identify specific wires, trace their path, and find malfunctioning sections. The tone generator connects to live wires with either a 2 ft. or 5 ft. test lead, with interchangeable ends that accept flat or pointed test probes, or alligator clips (included). The tracer has an earphone jack that accepts a 1/8” (3.5 mm), 8 to 50 Ohms mono or stereo earphone plug, and automatically mutes the speaker. Tone generator dimensions are 3.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) Tracer dimensions are 1-7/8" (diameter) speaker, 1-3/8" (diameter) body, 7-1/2" (length). The tone generator can be powered by AC current when connected to an AC line or by a 9V battery (sold separately). The tracer operates on a 9V battery (sold separately). Wire tracers are used to locate wires in walls or underground locations. They identify circuit breakers and short or open circuits, which break electrical connections and prevent optimal electrical flow. Wire tracers are commonly used by home remodelers, and in the telephone, electrical, and video industries.
