This is the fourth and final volume in the four volume work. It is concerned primarily with the war in the west, in Tennessee, Arkansas and other Western States, starting in July 1863. Chapter II starts with Union Commander William Rosecrans leading to the The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19-20, 1863. This was followed by The Chattanooga Campaign, a series of maneuvers and battles in October and November 1863 which was followed by Sherman"s march to the Sea. The last chapter ends with the Battle of Olustee in Baker County, Florida near Jacksonville on February 20, 1864. The Union lost that battle and gave up their efforts to take Florida. The Union troops were under the command of Truman Seymour. Seymour was recalled to Virginia as a result of this defeat. The author of this book served in the American Civil War. He was an officer under General George B. McClellan.
