Aleksei Balabanov(1959-2013) was one of Russia"s most popular and innovative filmmakers of the last two decades. His films have become cult classics that appealed to both mass and art-house audiences alike. Balabanov"s films spanned a broad spectrum of genres: Adaptations of literary works by Franz Kafka, Mikhail Bulgakov and others, gangster films, brutal military dramas - a seemingly impossible combination of inspired films from one director. Bricolage of the director Balabanova (Brikolazh rezhissera Balabanova) is comprised of interviews, documents, memoirs, and a number of scholarly texts that are in one way or another connected with the film career of Balabanov. The book contains interviews and memoirs of colleagues and friends (Sergei Selianov, Sergei Astakhov), university classmates and others. For the first time biographical elements of Balabanov"s student years are provided, including photographs and his university transcripts. In the style of bricolage (the improvised creation of an art object) this book offers articles by various authors, devoted to the work of the filmmaker. This incongruous combination of interviews, memoirs, documents and scholarly texts creates a compelling portrait of Aleksei Balabanov.
