This publication is a collective portrait of the rural women of the 20th century who became the symbol of the Russian village as well as its main labor force, local intelligentsia and public administrator. The book coves both private and public life of women in the country. It is based on archival materials collected by a Russian-British research group in 1980-90s, as well as in the mass media.
