The Turmoil

The Turmoil was first published in 1915. It is the first in a series of three novels (The Growth Trilogy) written by Booth Tarkington all of which have, at their heart, portrayals of personal and societal change in the United States in the early part of the 20th Century. The best known of the three is the Pulitzer Prize winning The Magnificent Ambersons. The Turmoil itself is a startling narrative that subtly reveals the changes in society through a group of individuals. The huge changes in the wider world are mirrored in the lives of the protagonists with a gripping narrative. This edition of The Turmoil ’ was created in 2010 by Penny Books as part of their series ‘Forgotten Favourites’. Some minor changes to the text have been made to remove some anachronisms that may jar a modern ear. Otherwise these are the thoughts and words of Booth Tarkington’s original masterpiece.
