A Tale of Two Cities

Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was considered to be the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era. A Tale of Two Cities is one of his best known works, set in London and Paris during the French Revolution, and its beginning is one of the best known in English literature: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness . . ."
