The Agonists: A Trilogy of God and Man

Maurice Henry Hewlett (1861-1923), was an English historical novelist, poet and essayist. The Agonists contains a trilogy of plays--Minos King of Crete, Ariadne in Naxos, and The Death of Hippolytus--in which Hewlett intends to tell the "tragic story of the failure of God to implant Himself in man, and of man to receive into his nature the divine substance."
