HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, SEPTEMBER 12th 1864: At a public dinner the deliberations of the Charlottetown confederation conference are to be revealed – as long as the conference participants get there. But that afternoon four leading conference participants, Macdonald, Cartier, Brown and Tupper, find themselves at a certain establishment well known to pleasure-seeking gentlemen. Here they are entertained by the notorious Lizzie Cramond and her companion, Maisie Gold. While unwrapping the history of one rainy afternoon, Dispossessed takes us on a ride around the globe and through a century of turmoil as four women struggle to take their natural and rightful place in the world: Lizzie, thwarted in her desire to train as a physician, instead becomes an actor and freedom-fighter; Maisie, having struggled with Lizzie across the American Plains, resolves to allow her mind to range the world of ideas after tragedy leads her to live as a recluse; Margaret Macrae, a doctor’s wife and apparently the recluse’s only caller, is forced to struggle with her deepest fear and hitherto unrecognised desires; and Christian, Margaret’s daughter, takes the story full circle in the appalling conditions of 1918 Northern France.
