Catherine Gouseff, a granddaughter of a Russian émigré and a professor of history wrote the history of the first wave of Russian emigration to France where statistical data are combined with oral and literary myths, survey data, interviews, memoirs, archival materials and government and public organization documents. Though the Russian emigration is best known thanks to the nobility and artistic elite, they were a tiny portion of the emigration.
