This monograph studies the concept of pain in the European and Russian humanitarian thought. The author analyzes the evolution of the concept and the ways of overcoming pain. Pain is opposed to several concepts from pleasure to boredom. The perception of pain very much depends on the individual, cultural context, methods of interaction with the individual"s body and the world, etc. The author shows that pain is a cultural phenomenon, and fealing pain is a cultural practice which is different in different cultures and periods of time.
