Wise to You

From the cover of Wise to You!, Marti Brom"s painted lips and styled, jet-black hair cut the figure of a diva. The title of the album has been written on a piece of paper, which has been pinned to a tree with a dangerous-looking knife. Clearly, Brom is not the kind of gal to be trifled with. On the title track, she gets wise to her no-good, cheatin" man, and even though he"s sorry for his misdeeds, she"s not buying it. This tough gal does have a heart, though, and can sing it soft and sad on a lovely song like "The Rainbow"s End." Backed by a spare country background highlighted by steel guitar, Brom"s Patsy Cline-styled vocal will have old-timers longing for classic late-"50s honky tonk. Genre-wise, however, Brom and her tight band cut a wider swath than old country. It would be easy enough to dance to the rockabilly-derived "Fallin"," an enjoyable bit of nonsense with some nifty guitar work by Jussi Huhtakangas. It"s difficult to guess where Wise to You! would be filed at the local record mart -- no depression, retro whatever -- but it shouldn"t be confused with the typical regurgitation of the past. Brom and company deliver fine performances, but more than that, they"ve cut a smart and fun album. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., Rovi
