Following her much-talked-about sonata cycle, Mari Kodama recorded the first two piano concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven with her husband Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphony Orchestra Berlin, and critics and connoisseurs were once again impressed by the synthesis of precision and elegance. The next chapter in this unfolding story can be heard on the latest release on the Berlin Classics label. It begins with the joyful Triple Concerto in C major, in which the pianist and her solo partners Kolja Blacher and Johannes Moser display their concerted talents in a lively conversation that also makes room for heartfelt trio intimacy. The next work is Beethoven s Third Piano Concerto, in the tragic key of C minor, which Kodama executes with passion, free of ballast, charged with all the more depth and beauty. It need hardly be added that Kent Nagano and the DSO follow her in perfect harmony. The pugnacious merriment of the minor-key close to the finale brings this CD, which has shown us every facet of the Beethovenian cosmos, to a satisfying conclusion.
