Photographic realism, and therefore the document, is not an ontological condition of photography but historical, cultural and political. The document is what remains of the event. With digital technology there emerges an imaginary of spectrality, that is to say, of virtuality, immateriality and obsolescence incompatible with the very notion of document, which is strongly objectual, factual and durable.
