Although outperformed by the legendary Mitsubishi Zero, the F4F held its own against the nimble Zero as skilled Allied pilots developed tactics that takes advantage of the F4F"s superior dive capability and its ability to absorb battle damage. The F4Fs were replaced as the primary Navy fighter by the superb Grumman F6F Hellcat, but Wildcats of all variants continued to serve onboard smaller escort carriers for the remainder of the war.
