The Chicken Flicker"s Granddaughter, (The Nature of Love), is based on the lives of three generations of women, grandmother, daughter and granddaughter, how their ability to love was crippled by the act of the grandfather. It begins with the story of a young girl, not yet fifteen, driven from her home in a tiny Russian village by the Kishinev Pogrom, forced to hide in the woods by day, make her way at night, eventually to arrange passage on a ship bound for Boston, of a young man from Germany"s Schwartzwald who dreamed of becoming a "someone" in the new world, how his fortunes rose and fell at a time when Boston was the vibrant center of America"s textile industry, of how the grandmother was forced to find work as a chicken flicker weeks before the birth of their fourth child, of how that infant daughter, spurned, rejected, later rejects daughter she gives birth to, and how that daughter, the chicken flicker"s granddaughter, struggles to break that loveless cycle.
