English Communication for International Teaching Assistants
English Communication for International Teaching Assistants provides much-needed tools to help nonnative English speaking graduate students become more successful communicators in undergraduate teaching environments in the United States. In addition to applying the principals of cross-cultural awareness within the classroom, the authors emphasize the importance of discourse intonation in building rapport, conveying meaning, and structuring information. The accompanying CD includes audio and video recordings of real classes that can be examined and dissected for successful discourse intonation practices. Dozens of hands-on exercises, including interactive tasks, skills-building problems, and teaching in a mock classroom, facilitate readers to address their communication proficiencies. They will transcribe and evaluate their own conversations in order to acquire strategies to become more effective speakers and to resolve communication breakdowns with undergraduate students. The ITA Performance Test, which offers guidelines for teachers for classroom communication and discourse intonation assessment, is included.
