Outrageous Sailor is a fascinating and involving story, full of character and detail. The author was born just before the end of the First World War into a family of modest means, who ran a greengrocers shop in Leicester. Much of his childhood was spent in the countryside. Evidently a talented boy, in 1936, at the age of eighteen, he won a scholarship to Cambridge and began studying at Jesus College. In the middle of his University studies he was called up for military service in the Royal Navy and thus began a period that was to last more than six years and lead in unexpected directions. Finally, with his degree in History from Cambridge and experience as a teacher in the Navy, it was almost inevitable that teaching became his profession. Outrageous Sailor is the story of how an undergraduate fared in the Royal Navy during World War II; from the training ship HMS Ganges to the oceans of the South Atlantic, the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean. However, since several unusual happenings arose during this period, it has seemed helpful to add the earlier years and the subsequent career to produce an autobiographical form of book, lending up to the present.
