A group of Chinese university students in the early 1960s suffered unbelievable hunger during the reign of Mao. This was at a time when the majority of Chinese truly believed government propaganda. Many therefore agreed their country was a paradise and that Mao was as the red sun. The general belief was they lived the happiness of the gods because their government told them so.In truth, most people experienced extreme deprivation and starvation and they battled for daily survival. No one dared to speak out but these three students were brave and rebelled in a particular way. Their story is full of fun and satire.To some the book may appear absurd but it is based upon a true story. Instead of depicting how the hero suffers, as other books are wont to do, I sing the praises of his spirit and courage.
