Childhood studies is a burgeoning area of concern across a variety of disciplines. The thesis underlying this reader is that social theorists have traditionally put forward a view of the child dictated by their own particular visions of social life. Thus images of childhood embody theories of politics, morality and social control. This analysis and selection of material opens up many of these assumptions to critical appraisal and is suggestive of new ways of seeing childood experience.
