Black Classical Musicians in Philadelphia: oral histories covering four generations is a compilation of 45 personal interviews with Black, classically trained musicians who were born, bred, educated, and significantly contributed to the musical life of the city. In their own words, these artists speak of their family backgrounds, training, experiences, and opinions on the world of music and their place in it. Included are photos from private collections, as well as an in-depth historical perspective of the community of Black Philadelphia that fostered and encouraged these musicians.
