Turkey is a remarkable passage-land between Europe and Asia, and the country reflects these two identities. The western half, with the cities of Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya, is richer and more densely populated, looking towards Europe and the Mediterranean. The other part, heading from Ankara eastwards, with its rugged, haunting steppe lands of Anatolia, points more towards Turkey’s Asian heritage.
