Dont Play That Song

Ben E King"s third album for Atlantic was based around the success of the title track, although in terms of longevity, it was the opening track of the second side, Stand By Me that would prove to be a perennial favourite. The album is also notable for the ongoing expansion of soul music, utilising a number of instruments that were not usually associated with R&B, including a harp, string section and the like. Towering above all else was Ben"s vocal, a singer without equal in the R&B world. Whilst the album has been criticised for the somewhat short running time, it should be noted that what is present was pretty much the standard for the record industry at the turn of the 1960s. The quantity therefore may be somewhat diminished but the quality is little short of exceptional.
