Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow - American Christians have embraced the music of Ray Repp since he started composing for the church in the 1960s. This collection is evidence that he hasn"t lost his gift, his zeal for Gospel or his commitment to peace and justice. Utilizing contemporary and folk styles, the 12 songs were written for use in celebrations throughout the year, including weddings, funerals and other special liturgies. The title track makes this poetic summary of how God"s kingdom comes: "When we cherish yesterday your gift of time, and live today as one, then the dreams we build of all tomorrow"s time, will help to make your kingdom come." Other highlights include "We Now Renew," in which Ray invites listeners to join him in this pledge: "We now renew our promise and commitment to bring good news and justice everywhere; to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind, the light of truth we"ll share." In the beautiful, piano-based "Song of Micah," God tells the Old Testament prophet the best way to offer praise: "May your love be gentle and your lives be just. And humbly walk along with me." Ray"s songs remind us of our calling to live the Gospel in our ordinary lives. "Everything I have ever written," he says, "has been a response to some experience I have found myself in. Sometimes it is a relationship experience; sometimes an observation about disturbing things I see around me. In the end, the songs all address how we might better become what the Gospel asks us to be: loving and just people." Offering inspiring listening and a welcome reminder of the holiness and charity we"re called to, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow is an impressive recording from one of the legends of contemporary liturgical music.
