This collection of recordings is a testament to both the flexibility of the modern brass quintet and the adaptability of some of history"s greatest music. Much of the music on this disc was written for a group of friends to get together and sing, such as Ayre, Bonjour mon cour, and Though Philomela Lost Her Love. The motets by Palestrina and Victoria were divinely inspired, and are absolutely gorgeous, although Bach"s cantatas are perhaps still the pinnacle of sacred music. Instrumental music for dances, such as the noble Alman, the flashy Galliard, and the Dance Suite are so lively that you can almost hear the fiddles and pipes and drums. The processional march for the Earl of Oxford was the most splendid display of nobility, followed by the dance version of the same tune. Water Music was similarly composed for one of King George"s parties on the river Thames. This CD is a collection of new transcriptions artfully performed by one of America"s newest brass sensations, the Synergy Brass Quintet. In preparation for this CD, SBQ worked with various researchers of historical performance to produce a historically accurate interpretation on modern instruments. This CD is a powerful display of virtuosity and musical passion as only the Synergy Brass Quintet can deliver.
