The number of black teachers in schools in the UK is small and actually declining. Researchers have been looking at the policies and procedures in initial teacher education in 17 different institutions and this book brings together some of their findings. The book outlines the shifting background to teacher education and identifies the practices that exclude or discourage black students. The contributors also reveal - tellingly - their own experiences as black researchers. The findings and recommendations in this book have implications for all future pupils and should be useful reading for policy makers in initial teacher education institutions, teacher educators and mentors.
