The Centre for Caribbean Studies at the University of Warwick was founded in 1984 in order to stimulate interest and research in a region which is only now beginning to receive academic recognition in its own right. In addition to the publication of the papers from annual symposia which reflect the Centre"s comparative and interdisciplinary approach, other volumes in the series are published in disciplines within the arts and social sciences. This study concentrates on the economy of the Commonwealth Caribbean, examining the options open to Caribbean mini-economies and monoproductive systems, and the constraints under which they operate. The author analyzes the particular problems of "development" in dependent middling economies which are too rich to qualify for concessional aid but are too poor in natural resources to diversify. It challenges many assupmtions and, set with in a wide framewrok, aims to provide a challenging analysis both for the Caribbean specialist and for those conccerned with general problems of small economies.
