Thirteen year old Emily bitterly resents the changes brought about by her parent"s recent marriage break-up. She hates her new life and is preoccupied with coping at her new school. Meanwhile her toddler sister Scarlett is happily making wishes on the old dishwasher that they inherit in the move to a smaller house. She calls it the wishwasher. The rest of the family fail to associate events with careless wishes made within the wishwasher"s vicinity, and Emily believes she is just riding her luck when she miraculously escapes a major confrontation with the class bully and her gang. Emily"s failure to recognise the machine"s power leads to a potentially tragic scenario involving her toddler sister.
