Doncaster"s Railway Plant Works was established in 1853 by the Great Northern Railway. Always referred to as "The Plant," it undertook repairs and maintenance as well as building coaches, carriages, and wagons, and locomotives including the Flying Scotsman and the Mallard. During the Second World War it contributed to the war effort in producing rolling stock and Horsa gliders. Doncaster Plant Works celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003 and is still in part existence today. Its importance to Doncaster cannot be overstated. Well-known local author Peter Tuffrey has compiled an affectionate illustrated record of the Works from interviews with many of its staff over the years, from managers, fitters, and platers to electricians, boilermakers, secretaries, and canteen staff.
