The Mansion tells the story of a people in a small town in Punjab whose lives are irrevocably changed following the fall of the Khalsa raj and the establishment of British rule. At the heart of this story is the mansion which is a mute witness to the changing patterns of life in this town over almost three hundred years. It is also a monument to the personal fates of its masters and inhabitants who have ruled it previously representing prevalent ideas and principles. Through it is relfected an entire social milieu in flux. With a deep understanding and sympathy for the beliefs, superstitions and aspirations of his charcters, the author with rare subtelty and insight recreates an evocative and authentic portrait of men and events of the time. He has managed to cover a large canvas of time, a gallery of characters, of different ages and period with an insight and understanding which is unusual.
