This study deals with Schleiermacher"s political activity during all phases of his life and work. Using a broad range of sources, it examines his political sermons, his activity in educational and university politics, his theoretical notions of the state, his collaboration in political journalistic activity within the Prussian Reform Party and his judgement on Judaism and Jewish culture. Schleiermacher"s political manifesto, which has hitherto been little regarded, is shown to present an innovative contribution to contemporary programmes of reform.
