Erroll Garner was somewhat unique among pianists; a self-taught musician, who was unable to read music and therefore remained an ear-player throughout his career, yet he developed into one of the most distinctive jazz musicians of all time. There is a joy in his playing, a joy that cannot be found anywhere else, and is usually most prevalent on his own compositions. Whilst Erroll was an exceptional writer (Misty is perhaps his best known composition), his interpretations of others work is also worthy of special attention. Close-Up In Swing, originally recorded in 1961, is another typically brilliant effort from his trio, with the albums ten tracks being whittled down from some sixty or so that were recorded during several evening sessions in July and August of that year. The final selection includes two of Errols own compositions in No More Shadows and El Papa Grande.
