This is reprint of a textbook for students of Soviet special geological schools and many be of use to geologists and geophysics. The book sums up and presents in popular form materials collected by the authors in the course of many years of research on the territory of the U.S.S.R. and in other countries of the world. It gives the principal information on the figure, dimensions and the age of the earth, considers external dynamic processes (the geological work of wind, of surface and underground waters, glaciers, seas, lakes and weathering processes) and internal dynamic processes (tectonic dislocations, oscillatory movements, earthquakes, magmatism, metamorphism, etc.). This book has been written by noted Soviet geologists Georgi Gorshkov and Alexandra Yakushova. Professor Gorshkov, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, at the time of original publication headed the Chair of Dynamic Geology of the Geological Department of the Moscow State University. He has worked mainly in the field of seismotectonics on such problems as the geological conditions of the occurrence of earthquakes and seismic zoning of various territories of the U.S.S.R., China, Burma, Japan, Africa, and other regions. He is the author of 88 printed works, books and articles in various periodical publications and scientific symposiums, most widely known of which are: "Earthquakes on the Territory of the Soviet Union," "Seismotectonics and Seismic Zoning on the Territory of Burma," "A Course of Lectures on the Fundamentals of Seismotectonics." Alexandra Yakushova, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Scineces, Professor of the Chair of Dynamic Geology of the Geological Department of the Moscow State University. Such works of hers as "Methodics of Strutural-Geomorphological Studies in Prospecting for Oil and Gas," "History of Recent Geological Development of the Eastern Sub-Caucasian and Northern Cis-Caspian Regions," "Formation and Destruction of Mountains," and "Neotectonics of Eastern and Central Sub-Caucasian Regions" are very popular among students of higher schools where geology is the main subject.
