Illusion/Allusion: Contemporary Sculpture
"Illusion/allusion" is perhaps the perfect epithet for the post-minimal age, the prescribed antidote to late modernism"s arid legacy of purity and clarity. This book presents the work of 21 artists who take moral positions at all points along a line between the poles of illusion and allusion: those works which create private mythologies or abstract concepts to fabricate their own illusions; or works which make reference to tangible objects or facets of human experience -- the allusion, whether to the figure or some objective presence in the material world. The work ranges from figural to assemblage to interactive, from room-sized installations to merest specks of matter at the borderline of spirit. Media include traditional casting, carving and forging processes and run the gamut through magnetic, photographic and electronic technologies. Also included are insightful artists" biographies.
