Dvorák: Symphony no 6, My Home, etc / Ancerl, Czech PO
This is the symphony that everyone says sounds like Brahms" Second, except that Dvořák had composed five symphonies before Brahms wrote even one, meaning that the influence was by no means one way. Of course, if you like Brahms Second, then you will notice the similarity in the opening themes of the two finales. The resemblance really ends there, however. This magnificent symphony is quintessential Dvořák--great tunes, luminous orchestration, exciting rhythms inspired by folk dancing--and it has never been better performed than here. This is, truly, one of the great recordings. It"s particularly impressive if you listen through the texture and hear the clarity that Karel Ančerl brings to the various melodic lines without ever sacrificing momentum. The three overtures make a welcome bonus. A major, major disc. --David Hurwitz
