The Militiaman

The Militiaman is about Robert Edwards, a recently retired government scientist whose whole world is turned upside down by a devastating family tragedy. As he struggles to come to terms with his loss, the miscreant responsible for Robert"s misfortune is himself killed. This has all the appearances of summary justice and Robert is inevitably treated as a suspect. In the meantime and to help him to rebuild his life, Robert makes a return to his previous employment with the Ministry of Defence, involving occasional nocturnal pursuits to assist M16 in their dealings with the shady underworld of the illicit arms trade. Numerous other reprisals and executions occur over a period of two years or so, which follow social injustices closely related to Robert during his rehabilitation and which increasingly point to him being responsible for the retributions. During a clandestine mission on behalf of M16, Robert is betrayed by his mentors and he is subjected to a harrowing show trial in Russia. On repatriation to the UK and whilst continuing to serve his time in a maximum security prison, he identifies a number of coincidences which suggest that another hand may be at work. With the help of an initially sceptical CID he begins to uncover a shady and far-reaching activity that has all the hallmarks of a well-organised operation working outside of the law. Matters then proceed at a breakneck pace and lead to a wholly unexpected ending.
