The Gustav Mahler boom has largely obscured Eliahu Inbal"s achievement as an exponent of the composer"s music. His Mahler cycle is one of the very best--far better than Abbado, Solti, Haitink, or about half a dozen others than come readily to mind. Not only does he respond to the composer"s idiom with complete faithfulness, he"s got an excellent orchestra paying close attention to the composer"s every whim. He"s particularly impressive in the finale of this symphony--a true culmination for once. Denon"s recordings set a new standard for Mahler"s music, being at once highly detailed and completely natural. Don"t pass this one up. --David Hurwitz
