Designed as an introductory volume to medieval subjects in the Pictorial Sources Series, this title examines one of the keys to understanding the period 1200-1500, "authority." It studies the way in which many of the old forms of authority in Church and State were placed under heavy strain, and looks at some of the new forms of authority which developed by their side in the wake of the twelfth-century Renaissance.
