Years before the Persuasions made a career out of a cappella singing, the Velvet Angels were there, with some awesome accomplishments that, alas, seldom got heard outside of North Jersey. This 19-track CD, running over 40 minutes, is an amazing document to the majesty and beauty of this unheralded group. Made up partly of studio recordings and partly of tapes cut in a hotel room in Jersey City, it"s all amazing -- just when it seems like another exquisite layer of harmony singing is beyond the reach of the room, there it is, wafting out of the speakers like the sweetest perfume. Worth the price of admission for their versions of Johnny Mercer"s "Fools Rush In," and Robert Calhoun"s gospel-driven version of "Ol" MacDonald," the Cy Iverson-Willie Hunter original "Mary," and the luscious title track (by Calhoun, Iverson, and Hunter), though almost everything here, whether from the studio or the hotel room, is pretty much up to that same standard.
