Among North America"s most elusive creatures, wolves are identified more often by the haunting sound of their howls than by sight. Wolf packs once roamed freely over the continent, but after a relentless war waged successively by settlers, farmers and governments, they have been eliminated from much of their traditional territory. Fortunately, as our fears give way to understanding, these much-maligned carnivores are making a comeback.
