It is intended as a place for critical engagement, examination, and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world, on stage, in museums and galleries, on the streets, and in communities. The journal addresses the need for critical discussion on issues in the arts, and specifically as they are situated in the present-day contexts of globalisation, and the social, economic and political artefacts of cultural homogenisation, commodification and militarisation. Papers published in the journal range from the expansive and philosophical to finely grained analysis based on deep familiarity and understanding of a particular area of arts knowledge or arts practice. They bring into dialogue artists, theorists, policymakers, arts educators, to name a few of the stakeholders in this conversation. The journal is relevant to artists, curators, writers, theorists and policymakers with an interest in, and a concern for, arts practice, arts theory and research, curatorial and museum studies, and arts education in any of its forms and in any of its sites. The International Journal of the Arts in Society is peer-reviewed, supported by rigorous processes of criterion-referenced article ranking and qualitative commentary, ensuring that only intellectual work of the greatest substance and highest significance is published.
