In the beginning were five similar murders and one almost certain killer: mortuary assistant Melkior Pendred. But with Melkior now dying in prison, a sixth, seemingly identical murder points the finger of suspicion at his twin, Martin. When Martin disappears, and another victim is murdered, Eisenmenger is called in. He performed the original autopsies, but in the light of new evidence he is about to blow the old case wide open.
