This curriculum unit, through sequentially structured lessons and learning experiences, assists students in comprehending and enjoying drama. The lessons include a study of some of the basic elements of the structure of this drama: setting, characterization, conflict, symbolism, and importance of stage direction in plot development. Background information includes a historical timeline of the period and of Helen Keller"s life and historical and contemporary information on services for the blind. Worksheet activities on the use of signing and braille, as well as static versus dynamic characterization, vocabulary, types of conflict, and plot line are included. Study questions for each act, optional activities, essay activities, and critical reviews of the original Broadway production and other media productions for the blind are also provided. Some activities are designed for partner or small-group interaction.
